How to Tune-up your Laptop/Desktop Computer.

Tuning up your Laptop or your desktop computer goes a long way in increasing its performance. There is nothing that pains like having a slow machine and you have some deadline to meet to deliver your project.
I have been a victim of this several times and always searched for the best way to increase the performance of my computer.

You may have a very high-end machine by this i am talking about;Latest processors, memory chips, graphics cards but wait until your machine gets lazy... you will automatically suspect that something is not right somewhere.

There are two ways that you can tune up your machine;

1. Manual Tuneup- this is the least expensive yet the most risky ways of tuning up your computer imagine
what would happen if something went wrong while you were busy trying to tweak the
registry! Another thing is that with this form of optimization it takes a lot of your time and
repeating it over and over again after some time is tedious.

2. Software Tuneup- this form is the easiest way to tuning up your system, its also safer than tuning the
system manually. Tune-up Softwares are programmed to check and repair or even
tweak the computer for optimum performance to ensure that all the computer's
                                 resources are utilized completely.

On this post i will look into several PC Tune up software.

For the gamers out there and those of you in professions that require high performance computers, we all
know well how expensive it is to purchase a customized high performance computer, more so there is no guarantee whatsoever that what you've bought will meet your expectations.
Many are the times i have rushed to a computer shop to buy the latest high performance machine and parts only to be disappointed by their performance later on.And that's after i have already spend a huge sum of money on these hardware.

James Scholes is of the opinion that you can turn an budget PC to a beast through his book. For
the doubting Thomas's out there he goes ahead and lists a number of some of the people who have used his manual and have achieved great results.Click here to view testimonials.

Here is an pictorial example of the results of an overclocked Core 2 duo E6300 overclocked by James Scholes.

As you can see above an addition of approximately 1600MHz has been added to the original 1.86Ghz of the processors after James overclocked it! And 1600MHz addition can go along way for gamers and other multimedia application users.

Do i have to have computer skills to overclock?

Cathode Ray Tube Monitor(CRT)COMPUTER MONITORS.

Monitors come in two basic varieties, the older CRT's(Cathode Ray Tube) and the newer Flatpanel displays.

What are Display devices?
A display device is an output device that visually conveys text, graphics and video information. This information that is displayed by the display device is known as a Softcopy and this is because this information exsistselectronically and is displayed for a temporary period of time.Below is a brief view of the common types of monitors today.

(A)CRT Monitors(Cathode Ray Tube)

The core of a CRT monitor is a large tube called the CathodeRayTube. It's screen which is the front of the tube is coated with tiny dots(pixels) of phospor material that glows producing an image on the screen when electronically charged by an electron beam.
CRT's have lost their market share in recent times but there are still some people who continue using them.
These types of monitors have their own share of disadvantages making them less appealing.
(i)They are heavy
(ii)They consume more energy/power compared to flat panels
(iii)Emitt harmful rays from the screens.

(B)Flat Panel Displays.

(i) Liquid Crystal Display(LCD).

They are the most common types of displays used in the computing world today. From laptops, netbooks, pda's,smartphones to Tv sets,Lcd's have succeeded in replacing CRT's as the preffered choice of display.
This development has seen many manufucturers invest billions in the research and development of the best and affordable LCD displays to earn a larger marketshare globally.
Some of the major players in this industry include:LG,Samsung,Asus among others that i have not mentioned.

How LCD monitors work: they shine light through a layer of crystalline liquid to make an image.
Compared to CRT's,LCD's have much pros and features e.g USB ports,HDMI,DVI,AVI ports on the back panel.They have a better picture quality though from my observation not all LCDs have crisp image quality so its always good to check the specifications before making a monitor choice.Here are some of the things to look out for when chosing a monitor;

(1)ScreenSize.
The screenSize is measured diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner.VIS(Visible Image Size)refers to the size of the image on the screen.
Lcd's screensize ranges from 15"(inches) upwards and it is always recommended to go for a larger display. The main advantages of a larger monitor is that you can open many windows without the need of routinely maximizing, restoring them. Its also a better experience watching a movie from your computer on a 22" monitor than a 17" monitor.A larger screensize also reduces eyestrain which may lead to fatigue.

(2)Resolution.

Resolution refers to the number of pixels a screen has.Pixels:also reffered to as "picture elements" and refers to the dots that make up the image on your screen. The higher the number of Pixels the better the image quality.

(3)Dot Pitch.

Dot pitch is the size of a single dot on the screen. The smaller the size of the dots the more crisp the image will be.For example you've you are in a computer shop shopping for a monitor. One of them has a dotpitch of 0.24mm and the other0.28mm .In this case the one with 0.24mm dotpitch will be better Why? in this case the dots will be much closer together and there will be more dots.

(4)Refresh Rate.

Is the rate at which a monitor re-draws an image on the screen and is measured in hertz(cycles per second).A good monitor will have a refresh rate of 70hertz or more.

Computer Primary Memory.(main/Ram)

Compare your desktop or Laptop from the time you bought it and at the presently!I bet it has probably reduced in its performance. There are many reasons for this which we shall discuss later on but the computers' main memory(Ram) plays an important role in the performance of a computer.

Since the type of Primary memory(Ram) used in Laptops is Different to the one in Desktops we shall first deal with laptop RAM.

1.Laptop Main Memory(RAM)

There are various reasons that can lead to the deterioration /slowdown in the performance of a laptop or computer the major of these being RAM(main-memory).

If you run applications like Adobe Photoshop,Premiere,3D games,Audio and Video Editing software's You are likely to experience some situations where the computer freezes or responds too slow.In essence it's always good to upgrade your computer's memory to suit your requirements.

Here are some tips:-

 1. What Programs do i mostly run on my laptop/desktop?

Do you run 3d games,Video Editing,Audio/Music Editing,Photo Editing software on your Laptop/PC?If your answer is yes then you need an upgrade. You need more RAM.

2.  What/which type of RAM should i buy?

This will be generally dictated by the manufacturers main-board(motherboard) specifications that are contained in the manual that came along with the purchase of your computer.

Here are a few steps you can consider.

     (i) Full details of the Ram you currently have installed on your computer.

You can check this through various ways...e.g
-Unplugging the memory chip and read the manufacturers label.
-On the computers boot screen by pressing specific special keys.

(ii) Open the memory section on your manual specifically on Ram(main/primary memory).

(iii) Compare the Ram specifications to those in the manual and rate your current Ram.

(iv) What are your findings? Average? Below average? or Above average?

     (v) What's your budget like/what can you afford?

On this..you can either buy a new or used chip. An old memory chip(s) has its own advantage
in that it's pocket friendly but the disadvantages could be more for example cases of No
          warranty!

     (vi) What are my options?

           (i) Shop around for quality product (E bay is a good start )

(ii) Try some local computer stores and compare prices.

(iii) If your budget included like 4 rams you can opt for 2 or 3 that are above average!

I hope this info has been of help,i will be posting more content more often.Post your comments and questions.thanks for visiting my blog!

Factors to consider when buying a computer.

There are various reasons as to why we want to buying or owning a computer for example:-
  • Social networking(face booking,tweeting,chatting)
  • E-learning(pursuing degrees online)
  • Gaming
  • Video/film production
  • Music production
  • Entertainment
These are just but a portion of what we use computers to accomplish.Computers are evolving fast and with each passing day what you bought a few months back will become outdated in just a matter of time. However let this not discourage you from buying a computer because there is an option of upgrading your hardware!,Yes and you will be as good as new.

Now back to our topic! You might have been disappointed by your first purchase or you want some extra info to guide you make a better decision

  1. Price: in my own opinion this should be one of the last factors that you should consider when buying a              computer. Why?you may ask.Like i said earlier computers and their components get outdated very often therefore it's always better to be on the safe side by buying the latest or closer to the latest depending on your budget.
  2. Research: before purchasing any computer product or component it's always good to do some                           research about that product on the internet, read reviews about the performance i.e the pros and cons of that particular component. You need also to compare different brands of the similar product e.g you could compare a laptop like dell to other brands like Toshiba,Hp,Accer, Lenovo e.t.c you can also en quire from your friends or a trustworthy computer dealer.
  3. Where will you be using your computer? If you travel a lot then a Laptop is recommended,if  you                                                                     work from a home office then a Desktop computer is more appropriate.
  4. How long do i intend to keep my computer? If you do not intend to buy another computer  very                                                                        soon, then my advice is just buy the latest on the market or closer to the latest and you will be okay.
  5. What applications will i be running on my computer? This also has a lot to contribute in  the                                                                                type computer you purchase. For example if you are a gamer,video-editor,graphics designer you will have to dig deeper in to your pocket for a high performance computer. This is because these applications require a lot of memory and processing power. To learn more about computer performance click here. However if your tasks mostly involve Office applications like word, excel Duo core processors will work well for you.

Technical Factors

         Now that you have a rough idea or picture of the type of computer you are looking for,below is a list that you should not overlook..i would say this are the most important factors you should keep in mind;

  1. Portability: if you are looking for something that can fit in your handbag, then laptops,net-books are what you are looking at.They vary in sizes, colors, and specifications.
  2. Screen size: i would say the screen size determines the size of the laptop or net-book or the other way round but whatever the case if you are more into multimedia e.g movies and TV then a bigger screen size is better.
  3. Processor: a processor is the brain of the computer and basically the more power the better.Processing(brainpower in this case)is measured in Gigahertz so the more gigahertz the better. To learn more about Processors click here.
  4. Memory:the more RAM(primary memory) the better the performance.there is also some thing to note here, for instance there are many types of Main memory.please click here and read more.
  5. Hard Drive:also called hard disk or in technical terms secondary memory. The more you have the better why you may ask?Click this link and find out more Hard disks
  6. Battery life:  if you have settled on a laptop then its important to get a laptop that can stay on for a longer period especially if you happen to be at a location where you cannot be able to access external power supply.
  7. Webcam: if you like doing video chats then a webcam is a must..most latest laptops come with this device already installed however you can still purchase one later on if your computer doesn't have one installed. They are quite affordable.
